UNODC Brazil conducts training on human trafficking and migration flows for federal public defenders

Brasilia, January 26, 2023 - From January 24 to 26, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Brazil promoted the seminar “Trafficking in Persons and Migratory Flows” aimed at federal public defenders.

Held in Brasilia, the event aimed to strengthen the capabilities of federal public defenders in criminal defense strategies against the criminalization of victims of human trafficking (TiP), focusing on improving the knowledge and skills of the 26 federal public defenders present at the workshop.

The meeting addressed, among other topics, the legal framework of human trafficking and migration, evidence and investigation procedures, regional legal framework and jurisprudence on victims of TiP who committed crimes. In addition, the “Study on victims of human trafficking exploited for the transport of drugs in Brazil” was launched.

The training course waspromoted within the framework of the TRACK4TIP project, which aims to improve the criminal justice response to human trafficking and works at regional and local levels to identify, prevent and prosecute cases.

The opening session was attended by Elena Abbati, UNODC representative; Roberta Alvim, Secretary of Strategic Affairs of the Public Defender's Office; Marina Almeida Bernardes, coordinator of the General Coordination for Combating Trafficking in Persons, of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security; and Amani Lwanzo, Policy Associate at the US Embassy in Brasilia.
