Aurum - Preventing Illegal Gold Mining in the Amazon

The project AURUM - Preventing Illegal Gold Mining in the Amazon aims to strengthen institutional responses and capacities for preventing illegal mining and mercury trafficking, considering the challenges posed by organized groups. It seeks to promote the rule of law and economic development in the Brazilian Amazon. The project operates under four main pillars:

Information and Analysis: Analyze and provide information on the modus operandi of criminal networks involved, directly or indirectly, in illegal mining and mercury trafficking
Interinstitutional and Regional Cooperation: Promote national and regional integration among institutions addressing the issue, fostering dialogue and facilitating the exchange of information and best practices
Capacity Building: Offer training and technical capacity-building for partner agencies and institutions responsible for monitoring and law enforcement.
Technical Assistance: Enhance the capacities of police and administrative bodies to address challenges related to illegal mining, including revising procedures, supporting operations, and initiatives that enable mercury traceability.

Expected Results

Improved understanding of illegal mining and mercury trafficking in Brazil through the development of technical reports;
Enhanced operational capacities and cooperation among public institutions involved in addressing illegal mining;
Strengthened capacities of public officials in preventing illegal mining through theoretical and practical training sessions;
Increased regional cooperation through workshops and exchange visits between countries in the region;
Improved mercury traceability and support for investigations through strengthened technical and scientific expertise.
