Brasília, 26 May 2022 - On 20 May, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) office in Brazil hosted a side event of the annual Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ), entitled "Decision Making in Detention Control Hearings".
Held in a hybrid format both online and at UNODC Headquarters in Vienna, Austria, the event took place under the Making Justice Programme (Fazenda Justiça), a partnership among UNODC, the National Council of Justice (CNJ), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the National Penitentiary Department (DEPEN / MJSP). The initiative focuses on challenges in the field of deprivation of liberty. The event was attended by the Presidency Assistant Judge of the CNJ, Fernando Pessôa da Silveira Mello, with expertise in the Department of Monitoring and Supervision of the Prison System and the System for Execution of Socio-Educational Measures (DMF); the Coordinator of the Governance and Justice for Development Unit of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Moema Freire; and the Coordinator of the UNODC's Rule of Law Unit, Nivio Nascimento.
Nivio Nascimento presented key results of the project's initiatives, including the national distribution of information materials to inmates and their families, as well as technical support for CNJ resolutions on mental health, the indigenous population, the homeless, people in need of care and the LGBTQI+ community, among other achievements.
The event also included presentations of five Brazilian judges regarding their professional experience with detention control hearings in their respective states: Acre, Ceará, Mato Grosso, Rio de Janeiro and Santa Catarina.
