Brasilia, 13 December 2021 - The National Council of Justice (CNJ) promotes the launch of an online course (e-learning) on the Nelson Mandela Rules for the Treatment of People in Prison, including a content that will be available for free on the UNODC Global Learning platform.
The e-learning course will be 200 minutes long, divided into 5 modules, and is aimed at penitentiary agents, professionals who work with prison supervision, and others interested in the topic in Brazil and other Portuguese-speaking countries - such as Portugal, Angola, Mozambique, and Cape Verde.
The Mandela Rules were published in 2015 by the United Nations (UN) to establish minimum principles in prison management and in the treatment of People in Prison. The e-learning course seeks to disseminate the application of these guidelines as the minimum standard in units of deprivation of liberty.
Available in six other languages, the content was translated and adapted to the Brazilian context by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in Brazil (UNODC) through the Fazendo Justiça programme - a partnership underway since 2019 between the National Council of Justice (CNJ) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with support from the National Penitentiary Department (DEPEN), to focus on challenges in the field of deprivation of liberty.
