Brasilia, 22 September 2021 - The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Brazil will hold the virtual event "Strengthening the rule of law through education: from theory to practice" next Thursday (30/09), at 10:30 am (Brasilia time). The webinar will be broadcasted by UNESCO's YouTube channel and will include interpretation in LIBRAS.

The event will feature the presentation of the Portuguese version of the publication "Empowering students for just societies: A guide for primary education teachers" and will host a debate on the challenges, trends, and opportunities for integrating the principles of the rule of law into basic education.

The development of the publication is consistent with the joint work of UNODC and UNESCO to strengthen education for global citizenship, as part of the initiative "Global Citizenship Education for the Rule of Law: Doing the Right Thing", designed to underpin UNODC's "Education for Justice" (E4J) project.

Focused on education professionals, the event aims to promote the application of its material in their pedagogical practices. In addition, representatives of the United Nations, governmental authorities, education professionals, and other policy makers from the education and justice sectors will also compose the panel of invited guests to share their perspectives on education and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4 and 16 - Peaceful, just, and strong societies.

The panel of guests includes: the prosecutor of the Public Ministry of the Federal District and Territories, Luciana Asper y Valdez; professor and coordinator of the Escola 2030 Project, Maurício Peixoto; professor at the Law School of the University of São Paulo (USP) and coordinator of the UNESCO Chair on the Right to Education, Nina Ranieri; professor at EMEF, São Paulo, Luiz David Sobrinho; and the federal deputy and professor, Israel Matos Batista.

Through an interactive dialogue format, the invited guests, including education focal points from UNESCO and UNODC, will discuss issues on the role of educators in promoting the SDGs, the importance of a joint approach to education and the rule of law, and the role of Global Citizenship Education (GCE) principles in educating children.

In light of new global challenges to peace, justice and the rule of law, UNODC and UNESCO consider it essential to empower educators, policy-makers and teachers with materials that provide environments conducive to training youth as agents of change.
