Brasília, 5 March 2021 - The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in partnership with the Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP) and the European Union Delegation in Brazil, promoted the webinar: "International Dialogues on Justice and Public Security - The impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on drug trafficking in Brazil and its possible consequences". The event took place on 2-3 March and was attended by more than 300 public security professionals.
Attending the opening session of the event, the executive secretary of MJSP, Tércio Tokano, emphasized the importance of the exchange of information. "The discussion has the main role of encouraging partnerships and cooperation, besides contributing to knowledge sharing about the theme. Our main goal is to protect society, families, and children involved in this type of crime," he said.
During the webinar, a number of subjects were discussed, such as the global and regional reflexes of COVID-19 on drug trafficking, traditional routes, data and general studies about the theme, restrictive measures of traffic and seizures at the borders, drug trafficking on the deep web, regional and international cooperation on innovative responses and cooperation actions, socioeconomic impact on counter-narcotics policies, besides a question and answer sessions with the participation of the audience.
The UNODC Director of Operations in Vienna, Miwa Kato, explained the importance of a dialogue and efficient execution in the use of shared information. "The identification of difficulties is essential in the building of public policies. The exchange is crucial for the implementation of the prevention of this type of crime has the proper effectivity", she said.
The Ambassador of the European Union in Brazil, Ignacio Ybáñez, recalled the need to discuss the issue and exchange experiences for the integration of cooperation among institutions involved in the creation of public policies. "Brazil continues to be our great partner. We believe that initiatives like this are the basis for the implementation of successful anti-drug responses," he stressed.
The programme of the two-day event was structured in lectures given by representatives of the MJSP, through the Federal Police (PF), the National Secretariat of Public Security (SENASP), the Integrated Operations Secretariat (SEOPI), the Federal Highway Police (PRF), the Department of Asset Recovery and International Legal Cooperation (DRCI) and the National Secretariat for Drug Policy (SENAD).
The event also included presentations by experts from UNODC Vienna, the European Union's FRONTEX agency and the Anti-Drug Networks of the Portuguese-speaking countries and the Ibero-American Association of Public Prosecutors.
