Brasília, 31 October 2022 – With the aim of discussing violence prevention strategies and exchange experiences and good practices on the subject, also contributing to the qualification of knowledge, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) brought together 29 institutions selected through a public notice launched by the Secretariat of State for Drug and Violence Prevention Policies (SPVD).
The event, which occurred on 10 and 11 October, brought together about 80 people to explore the theoretical and empirical foundations of violence prevention policies in Brazil and worldwide over the last 20 years. It also included presentations of overviews and programs on violence prevention at the state level, such as the “Programa Atitude”. The participating non-governmental organizations (NGOs) presented their challenges and the impact of their work in the state of Pernambuco. There was also discussion on the results of research conducted in the state, which map and help to guide action on violence prevention, enabling to focus on the most sensitive and representative points of this policy.
The technical training was attended by the secretary of SPVD, Humberto Arraes, the national coordinator of Cooperação Pernambuco (Pernambuco Cooperation) and general manager of Special Projects of SPVD, Rebeca Benevides, the executive secretary of Management for Results, Teresa Araújo, the executive secretary of Social Prevention, Dora Lima, as well as experts in citizen security and crime prevention from UNODC Brazil, Eduardo Pazinato and Rafael Sales.
The training was held in the context of the Cooperação Pernambuco (Pernambuco Cooperation), a multi-agency initiative led by SPVD, with the participation of UNODC, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), UN-Habitat, and the Igarapé Institute. Pernambuco Cooperation is a joint effort to develop knowledge and share innovative and integrated methodologies that can strengthen actions of social and situational prevention of crime and violence, as well as care for people who make harmful use of alcohol and other drugs in the state of Pernambuco.
The Public Call Notice No. 001/2022 was prepared with the support of UNODC based on the planning of the state prevention policy (LFA), and aimed to strengthen organizations, groups and cultural, sports and artistic initiatives of the Pernambuco Civil Society, to help mitigate risk factors and strengthen protective factors of crime and violence situations in the priority territories of the prevention policy in the state of Pernambuco. As a result, the 29 selected NGOs each received up to R$ 100,000 to develop their projects within the scope of violence prevention in Pernambuco, in addition to unprecedented training offered by UNODC Brazil.
