UNODC Brazil presents during panel on pre-trial detention at National Forum on Penal Alternatives

Brasilia, 13 October 2021 - The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) presented on its work related to pre-trial detention hearings, including a comparative perspective with other countries, in the panel “Pre-Trial Detention Hearings in the Americas” at the 3rd National Forum on Penal Alternatives (FONAPE). 27 of the 35 member countries of the Organization of American States (OAS) have pre-trial detention hearings.

The 3rd FONAPE integrated activities from the “Doing Justice” Programme, a partnership between the National Council of Justice (CNJ) and UNDP, with support from the Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP), involving 28 simultaneous actions to counter challenges in the area of deprivation of liberty. The “Doing Justice” Programme also counts on the partnership of UNODC in practices concerning pre-trial detention.

Overall, the event was attended by 1,000 participants, garnered over 4.7 thousand views on the CNJ’s Youtube channel and had the participation of 65 national and international panellists across its 15 thematic panels. In addition, 20 products related to criminal justice and pre-trial detentions were launched throughout the course of the event.
