After 14 events that brought together about 1.3 thousand magistrates and other professionals from the justice system all over the country, the special edition of the event Advanced Studies on Pre-Trial Detention Hearings for the Federal Regional Courts (TRF) will take place this Friday (25), at 9 am. Registration for the virtual event, restricted to federal judges, public defenders, prosecutors, and civil servants, can be made until 23 June.

The opening of the 2021 calendar for the Network of Advanced Studies on Pre-Trial Detention Hearings took place on 30 April, in an event attended by the president of the Brazilian Supreme Court (STF), Luiz Fux. "Guaranteeing a custody hearing for arrested persons, with strict respect for procedural guarantees, represents the mainstay of the democratic rule of law promised by our Federal Constitution," said the minister on the occasion. Since then, 14 regional events involving professionals from 25 states have been held.

This Friday, federal magistrates will be able to discuss national parameters for custody hearings based on five knowledge products recently launched by The National Council of Justice (CNJ). They will also be able to promote exchanges of experiences and share best practices in this field of justice.

Besides the opening session with representatives from all the Regional Federal Courts, the event will have two panels with experts and members of the federal judiciary. The first, from 10 am to 11:15 am, will address the theme "Crimes and Specific Profiles: migrants, indigenous people, small crimes in border areas", with debates mediated by Minister Ribeiro Dantas, from the Superior Court of Justice.

The second panel, "Social Protection in Pre-Trial Detention Hearings", will be mediated by the Auxiliary Judge of the Presidency of CNJ Ana Lúcia Andrade de Aguiar, and will take place from 11:15 am to 12:15 pm.

The initiatives are part of the programme "Fazendo Justiça", a partnership among CNJ and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), with support from the National Penitentiary Department (DEPEN), to address structural challenges in the field of deprivation of liberty. In the actions on pre-trial detention hearings, the strategy has the support of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
