Brasilia – 14 February, 2021 - The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) have joined efforts in the development of two publications, in Portuguese, which will be launched in a virtual event, in collaboration with the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP).
The virtual event will take place on February 18, 2021, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm (Brasília time), and will be held in Portuguese with simultaneous interpretation into Brazilian Sign Language (LIBRAS).The event, entitled "Strengthening the Rule of Law through Education: from Theory to Practice", celebrates the launch of the publications "Strengthening the Rule of Law through Education: A Guide for Policymakers" and "Empowering Students for Fair Societies: A Guide for Secondary School Teachers", both in Portuguese.
The session will be attended by government officials, decision-makers from the education and justice sectors, and other entities from Portuguese-speaking countries.
Using an interactive format, guests from Portuguese-speaking countries, including focal points from CPLP, UNESCO and UNODC, will discuss the challenges, trends and opportunities of integrating rule of law principles through education.
Participants of the interactive panel will discuss topics such as the importance of building bridges between the justice and education sectors, the role of educators in promoting the SDGs, especially SDGs 4 and 16, and the expected impacts of the publications.
UNESCO and UNODC have established partnerships with several Universities and Human Rights Centers in Portuguese-speaking countries in order to facilitate the understanding and consolidation of the rule of law among the populations of CPLP member countries.
In view of the emergence of new global challenges to peace, justice and the rule of law, UNESCO and UNODC seek to equip policy makers, primary and secondary school teachers and educators with the necessary tools to build an enabling environment for the development of young people as agents of change.
The development of the publications corresponds to the collaborative effort of UNODC and UNESCO to strengthen global citizenship education as part of the "Global Citizenship Education for the Rule of Law: Doing the Right Thing" an initiative implemented and designed to support UNODC's Education for Justice (E4J) programme.
The successful outcome of this collaboration, the "Guide for Policymakers: Strengthening the Rule of Law through Education", provides guidance to decision-makers and to education professionals on the potential of education in building just and peaceful societies.
