Brasília, 4 May 2020 - UNODC celebrates tomorrow, 5 May, the first World Day of the Portuguese Language. To set the date, a videoconference will be held with participants and speakers from various Portuguese-speaking countries.
The action intends to disseminate the website and the main Portuguese language publications of the Education for Justice Initiative, of Doha Declaration Global Programme.
In Brazil, UNODC implements the Education for Justice (or E4J) program that seeks to prevent crime and promote a culture of legality through educational activities aimed at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels.
These activities help educators teach the next generation to better understand and address problems that can undermine the rule of law and encourage students to actively engage in their communities and future professions.
In addition, UNODC has implemented several activities, such as the launching together with UNESCO of the Public Policy Guide to promote the rule of law through education, and the board game "Purposyum: Challenges of Justice", developed in partnership with the University of São Paulo, which aims to stimulate planning and strategic cooperation among young people to find solutions to overcome the most complex problems related to justice.
Since 2018, UNODC has been engaged in strengthening the United Nations Models (UN Models), through the translation and adaptation of the UNODC Resource Guide for UN Models, the promotion of training rounds for students and teachers in all regions of the country, and the organization of the first virtual UN Models in the country, this month of May.
For this first World Portuguese Language Day, UNODC will have an online presence of up to 250 participants and speakers from Portuguese-speaking countries.
