Alternatives to imprisonment: the brazilian approach

Brazil has approximately 650,000 people deprived of their liberty in a prison system with a capacity for 481,000 inmates (2023). As overcrowded prisons remain a challenge, the National Justice Council (CNJ), in partnership with the UNDP under the scope of the Fazendo Justiça program, has been working to support the Brazilian State in adopting responses other than incarceration. Among the initiatives, there is a series of exclusive training guides that combine expertise, research, and lessons to achieve best practices on alternatives to imprisonment.
