Brasília, 28 October 2022 - The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Brazil, in an international technical cooperation with UNODC Cape Verde, promoted several activities on the islands of Praia, Boa Vista and Sal, in Cape Verde, from 15 to 17 October.
The actions were developed within the scope of the Pernambuco Cooperation, a multi-agency initiative led by the State Secretariat for Violence and Drug Prevention Policies (SPVD), with the participation of UNODC, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Agency for Human Settlements (UN-Habitat) and the Igarapé Institute.
The initiative is a joint effort aimed at developing knowledge and sharing innovative and integrated methodologies that can strengthen actions of social and situational prevention of crime and violence, as well as to care for people who abuse alcohol and other drugs in the state of Pernambuco.
UNODC Brazil specialists in citizen security and crime prevention conducted three thematic workshops with community awareness walks in the communities of Achada de Santo Antônio, in the city of Praia, capital of Cape Verde; Boa Esperança, in Boa Vista; as well as Alto de Santa Cruz, in Chã de Matias, South Island.
The specialists also produced socio-community diagnoses of the dynamics of violence and crime, which are obstacles to human security, in these three territories that historically demonstrate the highest levels of exposure to vulnerability and violence, such as gender-based violent crimes (GBV), crimes against property (thefts and robberies) and youth violence.
At the end of the meeting, the offices of UNODC Brazil, UNODC Cape Verde and UN Habitat delivered a hybrid workshop involving the main local and community leaders to enable the construction of integrated territorial solutions based on evidence and best international practices.
Around 100 people took part in the activities, including professionals from the areas of security, justice and protection from the Municipal Councils, the Central Government and Cape Verdean society.
