Brasilia, 16 August 2022 - The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Brazil held the 1st Meeting of the Technical Dialogues on the Training of Prison Police to Respond to Organized Crime. With the support of the Secretariat of Prison Administration of the Federal District (SEAPE-DF), the activity was attended by representatives from eight Federal States and authorities of the National Prison Department (DEPEN). The initiative occurred under the framework of the project "Organized Crime in Prisons and Drug Trafficking in a Regional Perspective".
The meeting aimed to contribute to ongoing debates at the state and federal levels about the training of prison officers, especially regarding the response to organized crime within the prison system, considering the challenges posed by criminal organizations that operate inside and outside the prison system. The work produced by the group will serve as input for the planning and implementation of training to meet the identified demands.
Experts from UNODC and SEAD-DF, the board of the National School of Penal Services (ESPEN), and representatives of the Secretaries of Justice and Penitentiary Administration joined the dialogue. Among the key topics discussed were the international guidelines on the training of prison police, the importance of police training, and the gaps and opportunities of the curricula for training these officers.
