Brasília, 2 July 2022 - The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Brazil supported the preparation of an international Seminar on Gold Forensics and Illegal Gold Trade Investigations, organized by the Federal Police (PF), in Brasilia, DF, from 27 June to 1 July 2022.
During the event, UNODC Brazil presented the Project Tapajós, informing the challenges perceived by Brazilian national authorities to understand the prevalence of forced labor in the legal and illegal gold mining areas; the gold supply and value chain in the country; and finally, the convergence of crimes related to gold mining.
The main objective of the seminar was to discuss and share experiences regarding mechanisms and procedures to tackle money laundering, environmental crimes, forced labor, as well as other crimes related to the gold mining sector.
The seminar also brought civil society organizations to discuss on the impacts of illegal mining and the gold supply and value chain in local communities and society in general.
The seminar was attended by over 120 participants representing several Brazilian federal institutions (Ministry of Mines, Ministry of Justice and Public Security, Ministry of Labor, Central Ban), international organizations (INTERPOL, UNODC), civil society organizations (Igarapé Institute), foreign governments (Peru, Colombia, Australia) and universities (UFOPA, UFMG, USP, UnB, Lausanne).
