Possible class structure

 

This section contains recommendations for a teaching sequence and timing intended to achieve learning outcomes through a three-hour class. The lecturer may wish to disregard or shorten some of the segments below in order to give more time to other elements, including introduction, icebreakers, conclusion or short breaks. The structure could also be adapted for shorter or longer classes, given that the class durations vary across countries.

• 0 - 15 mins  » Briefly introduce topic, session learning outcomes and outline structure. Show Video 1: 'Interview with Ruhat Sena Akşener: How to reconcile freedom with the need for security?' (for videos, see section on Additional teaching tools).
  
• 15 - 55 mins  » Discuss principle of non-discrimination (international/regional frameworks). Discuss/conduct one or more of the following: Case study 1: German Constitutional Court decision regarding ' dragnet' investigations; Exercise 1: Discrimination research exercise (requires prior preparation by students) .
• 55 - 60 mins  » Short break.
• 60 - 90 mins  » Discuss freedom of religion and belief. Discuss/conduct one or more of the following: Case study 2: Limitations to freedom of religion; Exercise 2: Hate crime surge following terrorist attacks.
• 90 -120 mins  » Discuss freedom of opinion and expression. Discuss/conduct one or more of the following: Case studies 3: Freedom of expression, national security and terrorism; Show Video 2 'FORUM-ASIA Statement on freedom of expression, association and assembly' or Video 3: 'African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights and Freedom of Expression'; Exercise 3: Research exercise on Article 19 ICCPR.
• 120 - 125 mins  » Short break.
• 125 - 145 mins  » Discuss freedom of association and assembly. Case study 4: Freedom of association and assembly; Case study 5: Restrictions on freedom of association .
• 145 - 175 mins  » Conduct Exercise 4: Gallery Walk.
• 175 - 180 mins  » If appropriate, introduce the assessment questions with relevant marking criteria.
