Student assessment

 

This section provides suggestions for post-class assignments for the purpose of assessing student understanding of the Module. Suggestions for pre-class or in-class assignments are provided in the Exercises section.

Individual take-home assignment

The purpose of this exercise is to allow students to apply their acquired knowledge to a particular illicit wildlife market at the local level while critically thinking about solutions. It further enables students to independently research a species not covered in any depth in this Module and to gain insight into the literature (including academic writing, official reports, publications by international organizations and non-governmental organizations).

Exercise

Choose one of the following species and conduct your own research on the levels and characteristics of trafficking in this species.

  • Parrots
  • Fresh water turtles and tortoises
  • Orchids

Cover the following points in a research paper of 2,000 words:

  • Introduction
  • Why is the species targeted for trafficking?
  • Scale of trafficking (data, seizures, …)
  • Trapping/hunting/harvesting
  • Trafficking and sales
  • Destination and consumption
  • Perpetrators and networks
  • Conclusion
 

Group exercise

Alternatively, the in-class exercise on wildlife trafficking cases in the courts can be adapted as a student assessment.
