Possible class structure
This section contains recommendations for a teaching sequence and timing intended to achieve learning outcomes through a three-hour class. The lecturer may wish to disregard or shorten some of the segments below in order to give more time to other elements, including introduction, icebreakers, conclusion or short breaks. The structure could also be adapted for shorter or longer classes, given that the class durations vary across countries.
- 0 - 10 mins » Briefly introduce topic, session learning outcomes and outline structure.
- 10 - 40 mins » Discuss international/regional human rights law framework on right to life. Discuss Case study: 1 Violations of the right to life during military operations;
- 40 - 60 mins » Discuss international humanitarian law/extra-territorial application of human rights law.
- 60 - 65 mins » Short break.
- 65 - 105 mins » Discuss arbitrary deprivation of life. Discuss one or more of the following case studies: 2: Use of lethal force by States; 3: Right to a dignified life; 4: Heightened risk faced by migrants and migrant workers.
- 105 - 110 mins » Short break
- 110 - 135 mins » Discuss death penalty. Discuss Case study 5: Punishment of (mandatory) death penalty for convicted terrorists.
- 135 - 155 mins » Discuss enforced disappearance. Discuss Case study 6: Enforced disappearance.
- 155 - 175 mins » Discuss armed conflict. Discuss Case study 7: Use of lethal force and the right to life.
- 175 - 180 mins » If appropriate, introduce the assessment questions with relevant marking criteria.
[Alternatively, cover only some selected topics and undertake 30-45 minutes at the end on Exercise 1: Develop concept sketches based on what has been covered in class]
