Education for Justice (E4J) Initiative Grant Programme for Higher Education Institutions

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime's (UNODC) Education for Justice (E4J) initiative is delighted to announce an exceptional opportunity for professors, lecturers and academics teaching at Higher Education Institutions.*  As an innovative  initiative, E4J is designed to support educators teaching the next generation to better understand and address problems that can undermine the rule of law thereby contributing to achieving Agenda 2030 with a particular focus on SDG16. This grants programme represents the latest effort to engage collaboratively with academia and Higher Education Institutions (HEI) globally to achieve that goal.

Thus far, E4J has already worked with over 600 academics across disciplines and from more than 550 universities since its inception in 2015, after the signing of the Doha Declaration at the close of the Thirteenth United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. In the meantime, there have been several tools developed at the tertiary level in close cooperation with academics from over 110 countries. The great achievement of these efforts has been the multidisciplinary University Module Series, which focuses on 9 thematic areas: integrity & ethics, anti-corruption, crime prevention & criminal justice, organized crime, trafficking in persons & smuggling of migrants, firearms, cybercrime, wildlife, forest & fisheries crime, and counter-terrorism.

This Grant Programme is intended to encourage the use and raise the awareness of these important peer-reviewed educational tools aimed to support educators of HEI in their efforts to transmit knowledge on rule of law related issues. E4J is again turning to academics to help with the further dissemination of the University Module Series and is looking for the kind of innovative and inventive energy that went into creating them in the first place.

The aim of the E4J Grant Programme is to build an even stronger network between E4J and academics around the world who will both use and further disseminate E4J materials and tools. To facilitate this goal, E4J encourages HEI's to submit creative ideas on how to use a grant amount ranging from USD 5,000 to USD 20,000 to promote the E4J University Module Series, e.g. by organizing summer/winter schools for young lecturers, innovative conferences, simulation exercises, competitions, etc.

The grants are awarded based on the criteria summarized in the E4J Grant Programme for Higher Education Institutions Document, together with the instructions on how to apply. The call for proposals for 2019 will be open until 22 September 2019. Activities funded with the grant need to be implemented between February and November 2020.

* Applications must be submitted from not-for-profit institutions for higher education (e.g. universities) and not individuals or private institutions.

 

Application procedure

Step 1:  Check the UNODC Education for Justice (E4J) initiative's website and read the E4J Grant Programme for Higher Education Institutions Document.

Step 2:  Register yourself with the E4J Network.

Step 3:  Submit the concept note application form Annex I (max. 3-4 pages), together with the documents listed under Section 3 of the E4J Grant Programme for Higher Education Institutions Document to: unodc-e4j-grants@un.org stating in the subject line "E4J Grant Application: higher education". The deadline for applications is  22 September 2019.

Step 4:  Successful candidates will be invited to submit a full project proposal, which will be further reviewed by an internal technical evaluation panel and the highest scoring proposals will result in the selected winners who will be notified.
