Executive summary
This Teaching Guide accompanies the series of 14 University Modules on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, which were developed by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) under its Education for Justice (E4J) initiative. The series contains the following Modules:

- Module 9: Gender in the Criminal Justice System
- Module 10: Violence against Women and Girls
- Module 11: Justice for Victims
- Module 12: Violence against Children
- Module 13: Justice for Children
- Module 14: Independence of the Judiciary and the Role of Prosecutors
The Teaching Guide provides relevant background information and pedagogical guidance for academics who are interested in using the above Modules in their teaching. Following an introduction to the E4J initiative and the Modules, the Teaching Guide includes three substantive sections. The first section provides an overview of the Modules, focusing on particular thematic areas and the content of each Module in the series. The second section of the Teaching Guide provides guidelines for integrating the Modules into curricula. Specifically, it offers advice on how to adapt the Modules to local and cultural contexts, incorporate them within existing courses, combine content from different Modules into a single course, and change the suggested timeframe for teaching. The third section offers pedagogical advice on relevant teaching methods that could be employed when delivering classes based on the Modules and explores some of the educational literature that underpins these methods. This final section also includes information on student learning techniques, course learning outcomes, and the tools used to assess learning outcomes.
The goal of the E4J University Module Series on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice is to advance global knowledge about crime prevention and criminal justice, particularly with respect to international standards and norms. The Modules contain elements that can be adapted and customized by lecturers from around the world. The module series aims to be as comprehensive as possible by clearly explaining the key concepts for the various sub-topics of crime prevention and criminal justice. Each topic within the Modules can be explored in further detail and can even be expanded into its own course. Therefore, we have included optional resources for educators to advance their knowledge in related areas (i.e. advanced reading and additional teaching tools in each Module). While the Modules provide a strong foundation of crime prevention and criminal justice knowledge, these materials also lend themselves well to customization by lecturers to ensure teaching materials are suited to the priorities of the local context.
