Possible class structure
This section contains recommendations for a teaching sequence and timing intended to achieve learning outcomes through a three-hour class. The lecturer may wish to disregard or shorten some of the segments below in order to give more time to other elements, including introduction, icebreakers, conclusion or short breaks.
- Exercise 1 – Media analysis and brainstorming on the scope of “justice for children” 30 mins. (This exercise has a pre-class component.)
- Mini-lecture on “Conceptualizing Access to Justice for Children” (using accompanying slides) 30 mins.
- Exercise 2 - Restorative juvenile justice in Latin America – film screening and analysis 45 mins.
- Mini lecture on “Child Sensitive and Rights-Based Justice” (using accompanying slides) 30 mins.
- Exercise 5 – Sector and stakeholder mapping (30 mins)
- Reflection – students might be asked to write as many key points as they can recall, as to why specialized responses are necessary to achieving justice for children. If time permits, lecturers might prompt students to list factors that facilitate effective justice responses, and those that impede justice for children. Unless time allows for a plenary discussion, the lecturer may wish to circulate while students are writing, to allow students to ask questions and/or engage in discussion if they choose. (15 mins)
