Vienna, 15 October 2014 - TheExecutive Director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Yury Fedotov, today announced the extension of the appointment of Ali Bin Fetais Al Marri as UNODC Special Regional Advocate for the Prevention of Corruption.
Mr. Al Marri, who is currently the Attorney-General of Qatar, was appointed as UNODC Regional Special Advocate on Asset Recovery in 2012. Throughout his appointment, Mr. Al Marri has been a strong advocate of asset recovery in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. He was instrumental in the return to Tunisia of US$28.8 million from Lebanon.
His regional and international advocacy work also led to awareness-raising and partnerships at the highest political levels, including among the G8 and the Arab League of States, for the implementation of the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC).
The UNCAC is the first legally binding global anti-corruption instrument. It obliges States to prevent and criminalize corruption, promote international cooperation, recover stolen assets and improve technical assistance and information exchange.
