Shehzad Roy
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) appointed renowned Pakistani singer and humanitarian Shehzad Roy as its National Goodwill Ambassador twice, first in 2016 and then in 2021. While he is not currently holding the position, the process is underway to reappoint him. Roy’s role with UNODC focuses on raising awareness and mobilizing support for drug demand reduction, prevention, and treatment.
Born on 17 February 1979, Shehzad Roy is not only a successful singer but also a dedicated social worker and philanthropist. He began his music career in 1995, releasing six albums, with hit songs like "Saali," "Teri Soorat," and "Kangna." His most notable work, however, is the 2008 socio-political album Qismat Apney Haath Mein. Beyond music, Roy is the founder and president of Zindagi Trust, a non-profit organization committed to improving education quality for Pakistani children.
Roy has also produced and hosted two documentary series: Chal Parha, which sheds light on the state of public education in Pakistan, and Wasu aur Mein, a journey across the country with a villager that explores themes of progress, poverty, and patriotism.
In recognition of his contributions, Roy has received several prestigious awards, including the Tamgha-i-Imtiaz (Medal of Excellence) in 2005, the Sitara-i-Eisaar (Star of Sacrifice) in 2006, and the Sitara-i-Imtiaz (Star of Excellence) in 2018. His organization’s rehabilitation efforts following the 2005 Kashmir earthquake also earned him the Sitara-i-Eisaar. Additionally, he was honored as a torchbearer for the 2008 Olympic Games.
