21 December 2023, Islamabad - After the recent inauguration of the Women and Juvenile Facilitation Centre in Quetta, the Balochistan Police is committed to fostering a safer and more supportive women police force deployed at the Centre. Given this objective, a 3-day training for the women police staff at the WJFC was successfully delivered from 18-20 December 2023, focusing on standard operating procedure for handling of GBV Cases and
provision of counseling services at the Women and Juvenile Center in Quetta. The training was funded by the U.S. Embassy Office of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (INL) and conducted by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in collaboration with the Balochistan Police. It aimed to empower the women police staff with the necessary skills and knowledge to handle GBV cases sensitively and effectively.
The U.S. Embassy's Office of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement, through its commitment to global security and justice, is playing a crucial role in funding this initiative. Their support reflects a shared dedication to creating a safer environment for vulnerable population in Balochistan. The collaboration with UNODC further ensures that the training adheres to global standards and best practices in handling of GBV cases.
The training was designed through a comprehensive curriculum, covering the basic conceptual understanding of GBV to equip the participants with the tools and skills to extend support to victims of GBV. The sessions were designed to be interactive, fostering an environment of adult learning. Participants engaged in discussions and practical exercises to enhance their skills in dealing with the complexities of GBV cases. One of the key components of the training was to instill a deep understanding of the importance of supporting victims of GBV. Participants were sensitized to explore the psychological, social, and legal aspects of gender-based violence, enabling them to approach cases with sensitivity and empathy. The aim was not only to address the immediate concerns of victims but also to contribute to breaking the cycle of violence through effective intervention and support.
The collaboration with the Balochistan Police further strengthened the impact of the training. The involvement of local law enforcement is essential in creating a coordinated response to GBV cases. By working under the leadership of Balochistan Police, the WJFC ensures that the trained women police officers can seamlessly integrate their knowledge into the existing infrastructure, fostering a more robust and responsive environment for the victims of GBV.
A total of 17 participants, comprising 15 women police officers, one transgender constable and a male police officer shared their experiences and insights. The practical aspects of the training allowed them to simulate real-life scenarios, providing a hands-on experience. By investing in the training of women police officers, the collaborative effort aims not only to address the immediate challenges of GBV but also to contribute to a broader societal change in Balochistan.
