The forum served as a platform to exchange experiences and create professional relationships to facilitate international cooperation and future coordinated region-wide response. It brought together authorities from security agencies, law enforcement, prosecutors and policy makers from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Germany, Paraguay, Spain, and Uruguay, as well as international experts, to discuss current threats and trends on terrorism and violent extremism.
During the opening ceremony, the UNODC representative underscored that, to tackle the threats of violent extremism and terrorism, “trained personnel in risk analysis and intelligence for prevention and early detection, as well as in the investigation and prosecution of terrorism-related cases, are necessary and should be strengthened through international, regional, and sub-regional cooperation, information exchange, and the development and implementation of joint strategies.”
Mr. David Markey, Economic and Political Counsellor from the Embassy of the United Kingdom in Argentina highlighted the ongoing global security challenges, stating, “in our globalised society, criminal and terrorist groups learn from one another and adapt to new technologies. As they learn and adapt, so must we.”
Similarly, Ms. Ulrika Grufman, Deputy Head of Mission from the Swedish Embassy in Argentina stated that “the threat of terrorism is transnational. We must, therefore, seek solutions through global cooperation and a multilateral response. We note that terrorism is interconnected with other global challenges, such as organized crime and armed conflict, which require a comprehensive and inclusive response.”
The Forum builds on a series of activities on terrorism prevention implemented by UNODC in partnerships with several national agencies, academia and civil society.
