Internally, AIRCOP built on the existing expertise of UNODC to work on post-seizures investigations (CRIMJUST project); specific threats (terrorism, human trafficking, firearms, etc.) as well as anti-corruption/integrity. Specifically, on the cargo area of airports, AIRCOP worked with UNODC-WCO Global Container Control Programme (CCP) to build synergies and develop joint activities in relevant countries.
AIRCOP is part of the Countering Terrorist Travel Programme to assist Member States in enhancing their detection capacity against foreign terrorist fighters and serious criminals using API/PNR and other data, in compliance with Security Council resolutions 2178 (2014), 2396 (2017) and 2482 (2019). This project is coordinated by UNOCT, in close partnership with the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED), the Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT) ICAO, INTERPOL and UNODC.
AIRCOP task forces take part in multiple joint operations during which controls targeted at a special type of commodity or concealment method are heightened, during a limited period of time at selected airports.
