On 26 June 2017, the United Nations, governments, non-governmental organizations, the media and citizens around the world will observe the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking to raise awareness about the impact of drug abuse and illicit trafficking of drugs.
The theme is Listen First - Listening to children and youth is the first step to help them grow healthy and safe. 'Listen First' is an initiative to increase support for the prevention of drug use that is based on science and is thus an effective investment in the well-being of children and youth, their families and their communities.
In addition, this year marks 20 years since the inception of the World Drug Report. On this occasion, the UNODC will present the World Drug Report 2017 in a special event which will take place on 22 June at the Vienna International Center. Non-governmental organizations in consultative status with ECOSOC are invited to send observers to the special event. This information should be sent to the Vienna NGO Committee on Drugs ( info@vngoc.org ) with the full name of the nominee and the organisation, no later than 18 June 2017.
The World Drug Report 2017 is, as ever, aimed at improving the understanding of the world drug problem and contributing towards fostering greater international cooperation for countering its impact on health and security.
What you can do on the World Drug Day
Get inspired by taking a look at materials on the Trello board here developed by the UNODC to help you promote this campaign, and how to 'Listen First' to young people in efforts to prevent them from falling into the traps of drug abuse and illicit trafficking. There, you will find relevant communication materials (campaign logo in different languages, social media images, fact sheets in different languages, and the public service announcement in different languages).
We encourage you to inform your members and counterparts and share the theme and materials with them. The campaign materials on the Trello board will continue to be updated.
Specifically, you can:
1. Network and mobilise people to take action: organise public meetings and rallies, make speeches, distribute the campaign materials, set up petitions and run meetings, workshops or events;
2. Raise your voice and advocate: write newspaper articles or adverts, newsletters, produce radio programmes, participate in televised interviews;
3. Speak out on social media: adopt the logo as your profile picture on social media and use the hashtag #ListenFirst;
4. Like and share our Facebook and twitter (CST) / twitter (main UNODC) pages, and use the campaign materials in order to raise awareness;
5. Visit the UNODC website to learn more and access the World Drug Report 2017 (available on 22 June).
