Created under the banner of the Education for Justice (E4J) initiative and and now as part of UNODC’s support to educators around the globe, the Environment Team engages with academia to produce teaching material for the University Module Series on Wildlife Crime. The Series is designed to assist academics in teaching classes on those topics both in-person and virtually; elements of the Series are available in English, Spanish and Chinese, as well as in Portuguese. Five modules are available online covering: Illicit Markets for Wildlife, Forest and Fisheries Products; International Frameworks for Combating Wildlife Trafficking; Criminal Justice Responses to Wildlife Trafficking; Illegal Exploitation of Wild Flora; Sustainable Livelihoods and Community Engagement.
At the 31st session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in May 2022, UNODC launched Animals in Danger: Vita and Scooter on a mission, a children’s book that focuses on wildlife crime, climate change and plastic pollution. A joint effort between the Environment Team and the GRACE initiative, the book targets children aged 8-11, their parents and teachers. Building on the E4J Zorb character Scooter and focusing on the importance of teamwork, the book is meant to empower children to act against these challenges with ethics and integrity. The book is available in six languages in both a single page spread (better for printing) and a double page spread (easier to read online).

Raising awareness and sharing knowledge are key components of a comprehensive global strategy to prevent and combat crimes that affect the environment. The Environment Team strives to create a better understanding of crimes that affect the environment at the national, regional, and global levels, including through research and the development of knowledge and educational products, as well as through advocacy campaigns, awareness-raising events and innovative partnerships.
