Special events are meetings, presentations or panel discussions on topics that are relevant to the work of the Conference of the States Parties (CoSP) to the United Nations Convention against Corruption and that are held outside the formal proceedings. Whilst the organization of these meetings is coordinated and facilitated by the secretariat, the sole responsibility for the content of these events (including promotional materials and the events themselves) as well as for the related technical arrangements rests with the organizers.
These events are open to registered CoSP10 participants. The links for online participation in each event can be found in the INDICO platform to which registered participants have access.

In 2020, the Pacific Islands Countries united their “voice as a Blue Pacific” in the Teieniwa Vision emphasizing the need for coordinated efforts to tackle corruption. Three years later, PICs reflected on the challenges and opportunities of transitioning from strategy to action.

Romania is fully committed to UNCAC implementation. A panel of leading Romanian practitioners, from specialized anti-corruption agencies, with guest speakers from long-standing partner countries, discussed lessons learned in the last 20 years of the fight against corruption (progress, successes, challenges).

The growing importance of civil society in the affairs of the state has necessitated advocacy approaches which are more impactful and that is why strategic litigation, also referred to as impact litigation, has become an important tool in bringing about broad social changes and tackling injustices.

The high-level event launched “Nazaha's Global Initiative for Measuring Corruption”, implemented by UNDP. The session introduced the project's key deliverables, namely the development of indices focusing on integrity in public procurement, UNCAC compliance, and experience of bribery.

The event provided a description of the UNODC anti-corruption hubs and platforms model and outlined how the model strengthens UNCAC implementation.

The event discussed the use of sanctions as a tool to combat corruption. The panel reviewed US, UK, Canada and EU sanctions and in particular anti-corruption regimes. The panel also discussed the use, effectiveness and future of sanctions as a tool to combat corruption.

Panellists from States parties, international organizations and civil society discussed experiences and challenges in measuring corruption, focusing on the role of scientific evidence to trigger action, improve anti-corruption efforts and better understand their impact to develop better policies.

Through the Coding4Integrity hackathon, UNODC promotes technology to empower youth to actively promote UNCAC. The recent hackathon, organized with ACTA in Qatar, gathered over 110 participants from the Arab Region. At the special event, the three winning teams showcased their tech-based projects.

Human trafficking is a lucrative business that exploits millions of people and violates their basic human rights. Corruption allows traffickers to operate with impunity and evade justice. The special event explored how anti-corruption interventions can effectively disrupt the trafficking cycle.

UNTOC and UNCAC have many overlaps and linkages, as do their Conferences of Parties and review processes. The special event highlighted how civil society organizations can contribute to increased coordination that is needed to tackle their common challenges and achieve their common objectives.

The event showcased relevant experiences from Latin American and the Caribbean emphasizing successes and challenges in the implementation of a victim-centred approach to fighting corruption in order to mitigate its impact on communities and vulnerable groups and promote their access to justice.

Various gender champions exemplify the power of diversity and inclusion in the fight against corruption. This discussion highlighted the ways in which panellists, through their leadership roles, have promoted both gender equality and anti-corruption in their respective countries and organizations.

Meaningful youth empowerment must find a place in anti-corruption policies. The special event launched a guide developed by ICAC Hong Kong and UNODC to support anti-corruption authorities in engaging youth. In addition, Southeast Asian police cadets shared perspectives on ethics and integrity.

Parties to UNCAC are required to have several vital anti-corruption laws, but there is a lack of enforcement in too many places. The special event examined the potential and shortcomings of proposals for national, regional, and international enforcement institutions to address this gap.

For 100 years, INTERPOL’s powerful tools have helped countries take action against all forms of crime. The event demonstrated the continued importance of a global secure communication system permitting the secure exchange of intelligence relating to corruption and other crimes.
