In the 2021 Kyoto Declaration, Member States endeavored to “take measures to ensure access to […] Legal Aid for those without sufficient means or when the interests of justice so require, and raise awareness of the availability of such Aid, including by promoting the practical application of relevant provisions of the United Nations Principles and Guidelines on access to legal aid in criminal justice systems.” The event for the Commemoration of the 10-year Anniversary of these Principles and Guidelines aims at bringing together high-level representatives and substantive experts from Member States to discuss the strategic importance of equal access to legal aid in criminal justice systems for sustainable development and creating peaceful and prosperous societies, particularly for groups facing structural impediments. It will provide an opportunity to take stock globally on progress since the Instrument’s Adoption and highlight successful practices from across regions.
