CRIMES IN THE FISHERIES SECTOR (CFS)

In 2017, CCP launched a specialized training programme focusing on crimes in the fisheries sector (CFS).

CFS covers a range of illegal activities that are often transnational and organized in nature. These activities include illegal shipments of marine resources, illegal fishing, corruption, money laundering and document and tax fraud. By bringing together PCUs, fisheries departments and other relevant actors, the Programme promotes a holistic approach to counter this form of crime.

How do we help?

To tackle crimes in the fisheries sector, CCP assists Member States through:

Long-term capacity building: through specialized training and mentoring, CCP enhances the capacity of customs and law enforcement officers to identify and intercept illicit shipments suspected of carrying illicit marine resources and other goods.
Enhancing inter-agency cooperation: CCP encourages and facilitates cooperation and information sharing, for example, through joint inspections between PCUs and other relevant agencies. The programme also brings relevant law enforcement agencies and PCUs closer to the private sector and national counterparts.
Facilitating operational communication: CCP provides access to secure communication tools, such as ContainerComm, to enable a global network for information sharing.

All CFS activities implemented by CCP are framed within the definitions and mandate delineated by the UNODC Approach Paper to Crimes in the Fisheries Sector
