Regional training for governmental experts participating in the Implementation Review Mechanism of the United Nations Convention against Corruption
21-23 November 2017 Astana, Kazakhstan
The regional training for governmental experts officially nominated to participate in the Implementation Review Mechanism of the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) was organized by Sub-programme 2 "International/ Regional Cooperation in Legal Matters" of the Regional Programme for Afghanistan and Neighbouring Countries, in cooperation with Sub-Programme 2 of the Country Programme in Pakistan "Criminal Justice and Legal Reform" and the Law Enforcement Academy of the General Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The training was carried out within the framework of the "Regional hub against global threats" project, with the support of the UNODC Corruption and Economic Crime Branch.
During the three-day training, participants were equipped with the requisite substantive expertise for the provisions of the United Nations Convention against Corruption, with the aim of performing reviews with the use of proper methodology. Furthermore, the participants became familiar with a comprehensive self-assessment checklist and related guidance while also successfully practicing the completion of the self-assessment checklist.
More than 20 experts from Ministries of Justice, Anti-Corruption Agencies, General Prosecutor's Offices, Financial Intelligence Units, State Committees on National Security, Ministries of Finance, Agencies for Combatting Economic Crime, and Ministries of Interior of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan participated in the event.
The workshop was the first in a series of capacity building events on the implementation review mechanism of the United Nations Convention against Corruption to be organized in the West and Central Asian region. Officials gained in-depth knowledge on the mechanism and its guiding principles; developed skills paramount for the second review cycle preparation covering Chapter II "Preventive Measures" and Chapter V "Asset Recovery" of the UNCAC and were provided with an opportunity for 'peer to peer' review and experience sharing from the first review cycle and country visits.
Experts expressed their readiness and willingness to participate in future relevant training sessions for the successful implementation of the convention.
UNODC thanks the European Union for supporting this event.
