The Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Antonio Maria Costa, will hold a press conference on Wednesday, 6 February to launch the Afghanistan Opium Winter Rapid Assessment Survey. Mr. Costa will be joined by General Khodaidad, Afghanistan's acting Minister of Counter Narcotics.
Mr. Costa will present the findings of the report that give an indication of what can be expected for Afghanistan's opium harvest in 2008 - and what impact this will have on Afghanistan and its neighbors. The evidence in the Winter Assessment is widely used by counter-narcotics policy makers and all those with a stake in the security and development of Afghanistan.
Mr. Costa will visit Tokyo to attend the meeting of the Joint Coordination and Monitoring Board (JCMB) for the Afghanistan Compact.
