UNODC's alternative development programmes centre on helping small farmers with reducing their dependency on income from opium and coca cultivation by developing alternative livelihoods that can help them in licit income generation. Efforts are also focused on health, education, basic infrastructure, community development and food security. Special attention is given to environmental protection and improved markets for alternative development products. UNODC- supported alternative development also empowers communities while ensuring that both men and women equally benefit from development interventions.
Understanding the interconnections between illicit crop cultivation in rural areas and the flow of drugs and criminal activity in cities is key to comprehensively address urban safety and governance challenges. Providing alternative livelihoods to those engaged in illicit crop cultivation therefore uproots the problems at their point of origin. Furthermore, these alternative livelihoods initiatives can be adapted to urban settings in order to reduce local vulnerabilities that lead to dependence on criminal activity in cities.
