UNODC’s Advanced Training Equips Counter-Terrorism Analysts with Cutting-Edge skills for Utilizing Criminal Analysis Tools and Techniques

21 May 2024, Islamabad - The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Pakistan, with the generous support of the United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund (UNPDTF), conducted a transformative series of training workshops aimed at enhancing Pakistan’s counter-terrorism efforts. Across two workshops held from May 6th to 9th and May 13th to 16th, 2024 in Islamabad, UNODC equipped 44 analysts from the National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA) with cutting-edge skills in the utilization of Criminal Analysis Tools and techniques.

These workshops not only imparted invaluable hands-on training but also honed participants’ expertise in essential tools and technologies. Key highlights of the training curriculum included proficiency in i2 Analyst Notebook, Power BI, Predictive Modeling using Machine Learning, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Specifically chosen for their ability to handle vast datasets, these tools empower analysts to uncover hidden connections and extract actionable insights crucial for countering terrorism effectively.

Central to the workshops was the emphasis on Social Network Analysis techniques. By investigating into the complex web of relationships within terrorist networks, analysts were equipped with the means to decipher hidden patterns and identify vulnerabilities. This proactive approach not only facilitates the dismantling of terrorist structures but also enables tactical measures to mitigate emerging threats.

This initiative, hosted in collaboration with NACTA, underscored UNODC Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to strengthening national capacities in combating terrorism. By equipping analysts with advanced skills and tools, the workshops served as a pivotal step towards fortifying the nation's resilience against the evolving threat landscape.
