UNODC Pakistan Empowers Balochistan Bomb Disposal Unit with Specialized Training on Countering IEDs and EOD

03 June 2024, Karachi - The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Pakistan has successfully completed a five-day specialized training course on countering Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD). This intensive program was funded by the U.S. Embassy office of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement, specifically designed for the officials of Civil Defense Balochistan, equipping them with critical skills and knowledge essential for enhancing security and operational effectiveness. In the total, 26 officials were trained from 27th to 31 May 2024.

Explosive Handling and Evidence Preservation remained the core objective of the overall training. The participants received hands-on training in the safe and effective handling of explosives. The course covered best practices for collecting, preserving, and presenting explosive evidence, ensuring its integrity for judicial processes. Detailed sessions on new amendments in the law related to explosives provided officials with updated legal knowledge, enhancing their ability to navigate the complexities of legal proceedings involving explosive devices.

In addition, the officials were introduced to the Forensic Science Laboratory, gaining valuable insights into the tools and technologies available for forensic analysis. This exposure is crucial for improving the accuracy and reliability of evidence used in court.

The unique part of the training was practical demonstration by the Bomb Disposal Unit of Sindh, showcasing the use of advanced equipment such as jammers, mine detectors, and remote-control vehicles. These tools are vital for the safe and efficient disposal of explosives. Participants engaged in hands-on exercises, simulating real-world scenarios to reinforce their learning and operational readiness.

This holistic approach ensures that officials are well-prepared to handle and neutralize explosive threats while preserving the chain of evidence for legal accountability.
