Africities Summit 2022: Roundtable Discussion

UNODC and United Cities and Local Governments (Africa) partnered to host a roundtable discussion at the Africities Summit 2022 in Kisumu, Kenya, on 19 May.

With the theme 'Prevention of crime among children and youth through sustainable livelihoods in intermediary cities', the side event enabled policymakers, government institutions entrusted with the welfare of children and youth, and youth themselves to deliberate on crime amongst children and youth, and how to build resilience to prevent this from occurring.

Among the current issues discussed were structures that need to be put in place within local governments, with technical support from the private sector, that act as preventative measures from criminal activities, and the recurrence of such, where children and youth are the perpetrators and/or victims.

The roundtable moderators were Ms Vanessa Kaniaru and Ms Jennifer Githu, representing the UNODC Regional Office in Eastern Africa.

Thank you to all of the speakers:

  • Hon. Abdallah Said Mtinika – Mayor Temeke, Tanzania – President of the Side Event

  • Mr Clement Okech – Probation and After Care Service, Kenya
  • Ms Ruth Areri – Directorate of Children Services, Kenya

  3. Discuss capacity building activities to ensure sustainability of the resources provided i.e. education and employment;
