Enhancing Criminal Justice Responses to Trafficking in Persons in Ethiopia

Every year, thousands of men, women, and children are exploited and trafficked across the globe. Trafficking in Persons (TIP) is a serious crime, a grave violation of human rights, and affects every region worldwide. This is no different in Ethiopia where domestic and foreign victims are exposed to labour and sexual exploitation, as well as victims from Ethiopia, are being exploited abroad.

About the Programme

Funded by the U.S. Department of State Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, UNODC is implementing the Enhancing Effective and Victim-Centered Criminal Justice Responses to Trafficking in Persons in Ethiopia project, which will run for four years. The aim of the project is two-fold: First, to strengthen and enhance the protection of victims of trafficking in persons (TIP) as witnesses, and secondly, to enhance specialized law enforcement responses to detect, investigate and prevent TIP, especially trafficking of children.

As part of this project, UNODC is supporting the Office of the Attorney General and Federal Police Commission to respectively strengthen the capacity of the Witness Protection Directorate (WPD) to effectively assist and protect victims of TIP as witnesses, and to enhance the Specialised Crime Investigation Unit, including its Transnational Organized Crime (TOC) Unit and TIP Department, at both federal and regional level. The direct beneficiaries of the project include criminal justice practitioners involved in investigating, prosecuting and adjudicating TIP-cases and protecting victims of Trafficking (including law enforcement officers, front-line officers, prosecutors, judges, victim/witness support officers, members of the National Committee against TIP, governmental structures, and civil society).
