From illegal wildlife trade and forest loss to crimes in the fisheries sector and illegal mining, corruption is a key enabler of crimes that affect the environment. Criminals thrive on the existence of corruption as it enables them to commit, conceal and avoid conviction for their crimes. Corruption undermines sustainability efforts and exacerbates the damage inflicted upon our planet. In addition to detrimental consequences on the environment, it also heavily affects livelihoods and food security for millions and hampers the security and socio-economic development.
Corruption linked to crimes that affect the environment can take several forms. For instance, corrupt public officials may accept bribes from individuals or corporations seeking to obtain permits to bypass regulations protecting natural resources such as forests or fisheries. Similarly, public officials may intentionally disregard the shipment of endangered wildlife species or illegally obtained minerals, thereby facilitating their transportation across borders, or preventing confiscation. Incidents of direct involvement of officials in the embezzlement of seized wildlife and forest products have been reported in many countries.
