India: UNODC, NCSL join hands to empower Navodaya Vidyalaya Samity Principals on education for peace, lawfulness and inclusion

New Delhi, India/14 October 2024: Students of the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) represent a diverse cross-section of India, hailing from rural and semi-urban backgrounds, often facing unique social and economic challenges. As the nation’s future leaders, it is essential that they are educated not just academically but also in values that promote peace, inclusion, integrity, and the rule of law.

Equipping these young minds with such education empowers them to navigate the complexities of modern society, resist negative influences, and contribute positively to their communities. In a world increasingly marked by division and conflict, fostering a culture of understanding and respect is crucial for building a harmonious society.

Reflecting on these aspects, 39 Principals from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas across India participated in a RiseUp4Peace session led by UNODC Communications Officer for South Asia--held as part of a four-day capacity-building program hosted by the National Centre for School Leadership (NCLS), National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA), Government of India in New Delhi.

Participants engaged in open discussions and hands-on activities designed to strengthen educational approaches for fostering peace, inclusion, and well-being in schools.

Exchanging insights and experiences, principals gained fresh perspectives on ways to guide students not only academically but as well-rounded individuals. "As educators, we often focus on grades, but the workshop reminded me that students’ mental and emotional health is just as critical," shared a principal. Participants emphasized the role of school leadership as fundamental in creating supportive environments that nurture students’ emotional resilience and ethical grounding.

The session emphasized integrating peace education into the curriculum in ways that are practical and impactful. "It’s not just about having a rulebook for good behavior,” a principal shared. “Peace and inclusion must be felt in everyday interactions, whether it’s encouraging empathy or standing up against bullying.” This holistic approach resonated deeply with many participants, who shared real-life stories about students facing various challenges, from peer pressure to online influences.

The principals also recognized the value of open dialogues around mental health. “Many students are dealing with silent battles that we’re not aware of,” participants concurred, acknowledging that addressing socio-emotional well-being is vital to creating safe, compassionate learning environments.

Principals left with concrete ideas, such as forming student-led groups to promote kindness, hosting sessions on conflict resolution, and encouraging peer support systems.
