Nepal: Consultation convened to strengthen identification of trafficking victims
Kathmandu, Nepal/ April 28, 2019: In partnership with the Office of the Attorney General, Nepal, a two-day consultation, followed by a two-day "drafting session", were convened in April in Kathmandu to develop victim identification guidelines and national referral mechanisms to counter trafficking in persons. Representatives from the government, civil society organisations and law enforcement agencies participated in the consultation.
Victim identification is crucial to protect and rescue victims from the exploitation and provide timely assistance.
The development of these guidelines is therefore important for officials of all parties, to protect the legitimate rights of victims and to bring perpetrators to justice.
The victim identification guideline has been drafted on the existing international standards, recommendations and leverages the vast expertise and experience of UNODC in this direction.
This guideline will be further shared with relevant stakeholders for input before finalization of the draft.
Nepal has ratified several International Conventions including the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), Convention on the Rights of Child (CRC), and the SAARC Convention on Preventing and Combating Trafficking in Women and Children for Prostitution.
