Bangladesh: UNODC promotes non-custodial measures through capacity building for judges and prosecutors

Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh/03 September 2022: To assist Member States in fostering criminal justice reform, UNODC focuses on promoting the practical application of the Nelson Mandela Rules, with a range of targeted interventions aimed at promoting alternatives to imprisonment and building capacities of governments on effective prison management and security.

Taking forward these efforts, UNODC experts conducted an in-person two-day training on non-custodial measures for judges, public prosecutors and high officials from the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.

Attended by over 25 participants, the training aimed to support the Government of Bangladesh in addressing access to justice and overcrowding issues in prisons. Participants called for joint efforts to translate ‘theory into action’ on prison reform, in line with Agenda 2030.

The training was led by Ms. Ummey Kulsum, Joint Secretary (Opinion) at the Law and Justice Division, Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
