Bangladesh: UNODC engages stakeholders to examine link between climate change and human trafficking

Dhaka, Bangladesh/28 August 2022: In August, UNODC—under the aegis of the GLO.ACT-Bangladesh project—conducted a field mission to four districts of Khulna Division of Bangladesh to engage stakeholders for preparing a case study to explore the nexus and link between climate change and migration. 

As part of the initiative, UNODC experts engaged with 25 stakeholders from government, private sector and non-governmental organizations. Interviews were conducted in four districts, including Jashore, Khulna, Satkhira and Bagerhat.

The case study is part of a chapter on ‘Climate, crime and exploitation: The links between climate-related risk, trafficking in persons, and smuggling of migrants’ for the Women Development Organization Report on ‘The Status of Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women in OIC Member States: Women and Climate Change’.

The field mission was followed by a multi-stakeholder consultation on climate change and human trafficking convened in partnership with the Ministry of Home Affairs. Participants from over 10 government departments agreed on undertaking joint research to prepare a policy brief on climate change and migration related crimes. Participants agreed on taking initiative to prepare a policy brief on climate change and migration-related crimes.
