ICSANT offers States parties a wide range of mechanisms for international cooperation to prevent, detect, suppress and investigate offences involving radioactive material, devices or nuclear facilities as set forth in Article 2 of the Convention. One of them is cooperation on nuclear forensics.
The expert also discussed the role of nuclear forensics in strengthening national nuclear security response capabilities and emphasized, among others, the crucial role of inter-agency cooperation at the national level, as well as cooperation with international partners. In particular, Dr. Apostol emphasized the framework offered by ICSANT that enables States parties that lack sufficient nuclear forensics capacity to request the assistance and cooperation of other States parties or international organizations, including the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
