The threat of nuclear terrorism is real and increasingly transnational. A key tool in combatting this threat is the international legal framework comprising the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism (ICSANT), the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material and its 2005 Amendment. Through two projects funded by the Government of Canada and the European Union, UNODC supports countries to become party to and effectively implement these important international legal instruments.

On 22 November 2023, the CBRN Terrorism Prevention Programme, Terrorism Prevention Branch of UNODC, in cooperation with the Prime Minister’s Office of Brunei Darussalam, conducted an online meeting with representatives of Brunei Darussalam on facilitating adherence and implementation of ICSANT. The meeting built upon the results of the UNODC visit to Brunei Darussalam on 27 June 2023, which aimed at raising awareness on the key provisions of ICSANT, benefits of adherence to it and UNODC tools and technical assistance available under its CBRN Terrorism Prevention Programme.

The meeting brought together 20 participants from 11 government authorities and two UNODC experts. The participants reviewed outcomes of the visit in June, took stock of ICSANT‑related developments since then and examined the national procedure for joining international legal instruments, including ICSANT. The meeting also offered an opportunity to discuss tailored assistance with regards to the Convention that UNODC is ready to offer to the country.
