The International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism (ICSANT) is a key element of the global nuclear security infrastructure. Adherence to, and effective implementation of this convention is essential for any country, even for countries with no nuclear infrastructure, and little to no nuclear or other radioactive material within their territory, as it ensures there is no safe haven for perpetrators of illicit acts involving such material.

On 14 February 2023, as part of its outreach efforts to promote the universalization of this key legal instrument, UNODC conducted a country visit to the Republic of Maldives, with a view to encouraging the country’s policy and decision-makers to consider adhering to the Convention. UNODC staff met with representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Defence, Maldives Police Service, Attorney General’s Office and Prosecutor’s General Office. During the meeting, country representatives were briefed on ICSANT’s core provisions, benefits of adherence as well as the range of technical and legislative assistance services that UNODC can provide.

The visit took place within the framework of the project “Union support to promote universalization and effective implementation of the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism” funded by the European Union.
