Jakarta (Indonesia), 21 August 2020 - Each year, the 21st of August provides an opportunity to honour the victims and survivors of terrorism. It has been designated as the official Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism by the General Assembly (A/RES/72/165 19 December 2017).
This year, that United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) partnered with the Indonesian Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK) to hold an online event in which victims of terrorism were invited to share their experiences and give their testimony.
“We would like to ask you to take a moment of silence for two minutes on 21 August 2020 at 10am for our brothers and sisters are victims of terrorist attacks.”
“A fundamental component of any effective response to terrorism is upholding the rights and needs of victims and survivors,” stated Collie F. Brown, Country Manager of UNODC in Indonesia and Liaison to ASEAN. “This annual occasion provides the UN and our close partners to stop and reflect on the experiences of victims and survivors, as well as to ask ourselves some hard questions – what can we do better to recognise their tremendous sacrifice?”
The event also provided an opportunity for LPSK to launch their initiative to request two minutes of silence for the victims of terrorism. The two minutes of silence were held during the event. LPSK also disseminated a media information campaign to encourage members of the public to also observe two minutes of silence. LPSK will be leading this campaign every year.
The event was funded by the Guyub Project. This is a joint project to prevent violent extremism in East Java that is implemented by UNODC, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and UN Women. For more information about the Guyub Project, please contact Peacehub@un.or.id.
