Bangkok (Thailand), 9 December 2013 - International Anti-Corruption Day on December 9th provides an opportunity for the international community to present a unified front in the fight against corruption and celebrate the considerable and important progress made over the last year.
This year, United Nations Partners in East Asia and the Pacific, as well as governments and non-governmental entities, organized a series of events to celebrate International Anti-Corruption Day across the region.

Brunei, Cambodia, Lao, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, Viet Nam and Timor Leste were only a few of the countries in the region that hosted events this International Anti-Corruption Day. These events took the universal message against corruption and tailored it to local audiences. The great extent of participants and events represents just how much has been achieved in the past year; although if the fight against corruption is to be successful, much more needs to be done - every day of the year.
This year, UNODC and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the two United Nations bodies leading global awareness campaigns against corruption since 2009, also launched a new global campaign under the theme
Zero Corruption - 100% Development. The overall goal of the campaign is to promote and support the strengthening and enhancing of national and regional abilities to reduce and end current corruption activities, and prevent future corruption from limiting regional progress.
Corruption is a complex social, political and economic phenomenon that disproportionately harms the poor, stifles economic growth and diverts desperately needed funds from education, healthcare and other public services. Effective prevention and detection of corruption requires a whole-of-government and society approach, including different sectors and branches of government, civil society groups and the private sector.
