Experts addressed a wide array of topics, from the collection and management of forensic evidence to preventing secondary victimization of sexual assault survivors. Participants received detailed guidance on the South African Femicide Prevention Strategy and the use of forensic evidence in court proceedings.
One participant hoped to gain skills in presenting and interpreting DNA results in court, leading and challenging forensic evidence, and building confidence in courtroom presentations. “I hope to deepen my knowledge of evidence collection, the chain of custody, and the roles of all stakeholders involved in forensic investigations.” She said.
“I also hope to develop my ability to analyze and address the technical aspects of evidence compilation, properly guide investigations, ensure successful prosecutions, and improve the accuracy of documentation, such as the completion of the J88 form.” She added.
The workshop's key outcomes include improved multisectoral cooperation between law enforcement, judiciary, and forensic experts. There was an enhanced understanding and application of forensic techniques in GBV cases, as well as strengthened efforts to address systemic challenges in court processes, including backlogs, case withdrawals, and DNA testing delays.
