Tripoli, Libya - 31 August 2022
As part of the United Nations coordinated response to the COVID-19 pandemic in Libya, UNODC equipped the Libyan Ministry of Health, Ministry of Justice and Ministry of Interior in Tripoli with personal protective and medical equipment to isolate and test service providers, including social workers and healthcare practitioners working with migrant populations and potential victims of Trafficking in Persons or Smuggling of Migrants and to frontline officers and forensic doctors to prevent COVID-19 transmission. The provision of equipment is generously funded by the European Union within the project “Dismantling human trafficking and migrant smuggling criminal networks in North Africa.”
UNODC stresses the importance of following an evidence-based response to the COVID 19 pandemic in line with WHO guidance. Solidarity is needed to deliver a coordinated response to overcome COVID-19’s negative consequences, and partners need to act together and support one another in an inclusive way.
“Dismantling human trafficking and migrant smuggling criminal networks in North Africa" is a three-year (2019-2022) €15 million regional joint initiative by the European Union and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) under the framework of the North Africa Window of the European Union Emergency Trust Fund for Africa. The project consists of a regional intervention covering Egypt, Libya, Morocco, and Tunisia to support the effective dismantling of criminal networks involved in migrant smuggling and human trafficking, while at the same time upholding the rights of migrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and vulnerable groups.
